Brief History of India
Early History
- Human Habitation: Evidence of early human habitation in India dates back millennia, including the Indus Valley Civilization at sites such as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro.
- Ethnic Groups: The region was populated by many peoples and cultures across the subcontinent, with a rich diversity of languages and traditions.
Trade and Colonization
- Trade Routes: India long sat on major land and sea trade routes linking Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.
- British Colonization: European trading powers competed for influence; British control expanded through the East India Company and later the British Raj after 1858.
Path to Independence
- Political Movements: The struggle for independence gained momentum in the 20th century through the Indian National Congress and mass movements led by figures such as Mahatma Gandhi.
- Independence: India achieved independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, with Jawaharlal Nehru as its first Prime Minister. The country became a republic on January 26, 1950.
CIYWR in India
As with our other Revival outreaches, we purposely work with local pastors and religious leaders well in advance of our Crusades, during the Revivals, and afterwards. We have found this partnership to be the most effective in winning souls for Jesus Christ and making solid disciples of the new converts. Because of the large area, and population, we have found that we must be very strategic with our resources (both financially and with our time).
