LIBERIA
For the People of LIBERIA
For the Gospel
“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He hath believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth shall not be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; an if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen”
Mark 16:15-20 (KJV)
Brief History of Liberia
Overview of Liberia
Liberia, founded in 1847 by freed American slaves, is recognized as Africa’s oldest republic. It is situated on the West African coast, bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Ivory Coast. The capital city is Monrovia.
Population
- Total Population: Approximately 5.5 million
- Ethnic Composition: Predominantly indigenous Africans, with Americo-Liberians (descendants of freed slaves) making up about 5% of the population.
- Languages: The official language is English, but over 20 indigenous languages are also spoken.
Economy
Liberia’s economy is primarily based on agriculture and natural resources. Key aspects include:
- Main Industries: Agriculture, rubber production, and mining (iron ore).
- Economic Challenges: The country faces significant economic struggles, with a high poverty rate and limited infrastructure.
- Recent Developments: Efforts are underway to improve electricity and water supply, which are critical for economic growth.
Civil Wars
Liberia has endured two devastating civil wars:
- First Civil War (1989-1997):
- Initiated by the National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) led by Charles Taylor.
- Resulted in approximately 250,000 deaths and massive displacement of civilians.
- Second Civil War (1999-2003):
- Followed the first war and involved multiple factions.
- Ended with the exile of Charles Taylor and the establishment of a transitional government.
The aftermath of these conflicts has left lasting impacts on Liberia’s social and economic fabric, but recent political stability offers hope for recovery and development.
