The Gambia

The Gambia, officially the Republic of The Gambia, is the smallest country on mainland Africa. It is bordered by Senegal on nearly all sides, with a western coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. The capital city is Banjul.

• Predominant religion: about 95.7% Muslim
• Official language: English

• Primarily agricultural, with groundnuts (peanuts) as a key export
• Tourism is important, especially coastal resorts
• Economic challenges include high poverty — about 17.2% live in extreme poverty

• Independence from Britain on February 18, 1965
• Political instability and unrest have marked parts of its modern history
• The post-2016 democratic transition has been relatively peaceful, with ongoing work to strengthen institutions

As with our other Revival outreaches, we purposely work with local pastors and religious leaders in The Gambia well in advance of our Crusades, during the Revivals, and afterwards. Upcoming work remains strategic with both finances and time.
