Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau is a small West African nation bordered by Senegal to the north and Guinea to the southeast. It has a population of approximately 2.1 million. The capital and largest city is Bissau.

• Colonial era: part of the Portuguese Empire from the 15th century (Portuguese Guinea) until independence
• Independence declared September 24, 1973 (recognized 1974) after a long liberation struggle led by PAIGC
• Post-independence political instability, including a civil war in the late 1990s
• Ongoing governance challenges continue to shape national life

• One of the world’s poorer nations, heavily reliant on agriculture
• Cashew nuts are the main source of foreign exchange for many farmers
• Challenges include foreign debt, aid dependence, and pressures that strain governance

As with our other Revival outreaches, we purposely work with local pastors and religious leaders in Guinea-Bissau well in advance of our Crusades, during the Revivals, and afterwards. Upcoming work remains strategic with both finances and time.
