Brief History of Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania located in the Indian Ocean, consisting mainly of Unguja and Pemba islands. It has a population of approximately 1.89 million, with Swahili, Arabic, and English as the official languages; the majority of the population is 98% Muslim. The economy is primarily based on spices, tourism, and fishing, and Zanzibar gained independence from Britain on December 10, 1963 before merging with Tanganyika to form Tanzania in 1964.
