SIERRA LEONE

For the People of Sierra Leone ✝ For the Gospel

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”
Mark 16:15 (KJV)

Brief History of Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is a country located on the west coast of Africa. It has a population of approximately 8.6 million people. The capital city is Freetown, which is known for its large natural harbor.

Historical Background

  • Colonial Era: Sierra Leone was established as a British colony in 1808. It was initially a settlement for freed slaves and became a significant location for the abolitionist movement.
  • Civil War: The country experienced a devastating civil war from 1991 to 2002. This conflict was fueled by political instability and economic decline, leading to widespread violence and human rights abuses. An estimated 75,000 people were killed, and millions were displaced during this period.

  • Post-War Recovery: Since the end of the civil war, Sierra Leone has focused on rebuilding its infrastructure and economy, although challenges remain.

Economy

Sierra Leone’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, with a significant portion of the population engaged in subsistence farming. The country is rich in natural resources, particularly – diamonds, gold, bauxite, and rutile.

Despite its rich resources, the economy faces challenges such as corruption, limited infrastructure, and the impacts of past conflicts. Efforts are ongoing to improve economic stability and growth.

CIYWR in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone is one of CIYWR’s five main countries of outreach in west Africa. As with our other Revival outreaches, we purposely work with local pastors and religious leaders well in advance of our Crusades, during the Revivals, and afterwards. We have found this partnership to be the most effective in winning souls for Christ and making solid disciples of the new converts. Because of its proximity to other work we do in west Africa, we try to be very strategic with our efforts and our resources (both financially and with our time).

“For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” Luke 9:56

CIYWR’s Service Work in Sierra Leone includes Hospital Visits, and local Church Growth and Outreach.

“Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”
Acts 2: 38,39
