Brief History of Ghana

Ghana is a country located in West Africa, bordered by Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Togo, with the Gulf of Guinea to the south. It has a diverse population of over 35 million people, making it one of the most populous countries in the region.

History

• Independence: Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, becoming the first sub-Saharan African nation to do so.
• Political Instability: The country has faced periods of political turmoil, including several coups and conflicts, particularly in the late 20th century. However, it has transitioned to a stable multi-party democracy since the early 1990s.

Economy

Ghana’s economy is primarily driven by its rich natural resources:

• Key Exports: The main exports include gold, cocoa, and crude oil.
• Economic Growth: The country has experienced significant economic growth, particularly in the cocoa and oil sectors, contributing to its development.

Wars and Conflicts

Ghana has experienced various conflicts, particularly during the colonial period and post-independence. Key points include:

• Colonial Resistance: The Ashanti Kingdom resisted British colonization, leading to several wars in the 19th century.
• Post-Independence Coups: After independence, Ghana faced military coups and political unrest, impacting its stability until the establishment of a democratic government in the 1990s.

Ghana is now recognized as one of the more stable democracies in West Africa, with ongoing efforts to improve its economy and governance.

Ghana is one of CIYWR’s five main countries of outreach in west Africa. As with our other Revival outreaches, we purposely work with local pastors and religious leaders well in advance of our Crusades, during the Revivals, and afterwards. We have found this partnership to be the most effective in winning souls for Christ and making solid disciples of the new converts. Because of its proximity to other work we do in west Africa, we try to be very strategic with our efforts and our resources (both financially and with our time).
